Flowing masses of grassy blades create a bold statement in this backyard retreat
Landscape architect pencil drawing of landscape to be planted with Southern Living plants

Ornamental grasses lend themselves to mass planting in both formal and informal gardens. Fine-textured leaf blades provide visual contrast to the broader foliage of perennials and shrubs, while the upright, flowing habit of grasses adds structure and graceful movement to the garden.

This design builds upon the mass appeal of grasses by playing up a tonal contrast between the white-variegated foliage of Platinum Beauty™Lomandra and sleek green leaves of ‘Soft Caress’ Mahonia. The combination energizes the garden, offering year-long color and texture.

Seasonal color enhances this space with Early Wonder®Camellia tucked along the green wall enclosing the garden. Easily incorporate seasonal bloomers using containers where ground space is unavailable.

A small plant palette and mass plantings help keep maintenance needs to a minimum, while repetition of plant materials, color, and forms creates harmony throughout the space.

Here is the planting design to build your own backyard retreat and experiment with plant combinations to match your desired mood.
