With rich color, lush evergreen foliage and a gently flowing habit, window boxes and planters have been begging for a plant like this for decades. Give Purple Pixie® Dwarf Weeping Loropetalum a little height and it will release cascades of pure garden magic.
1. Going Up
While Purple Pixie® Loropetalum certainly makes an excellent groundcover, it needs a little lift to shine in containers. Plant it in window boxes, pedestal planters, urns and other tall containers to allow the foliage room to spill. Plant growth will mound slightly before trailing, creating a dense, full appearance. While Purple Pixie® is striking as a solo planting, it also pairs beautifully in mixed containers.
2. Mix It Up
Try complementing Purple Pixie’s® deep hue with vibrant chartreuse foliage. Interplant just a few sprigs of golden creeping Jenny for subtle contrast or make a bold statement by planting alongside ‘Lemon Lime’ Nandina. For color and textural contrast pair Purple Pixie® with Evercolor® ‘Everillo’ Carex or ‘Angelina’ sedum.
3. Bring on the Blooms
You can plant stunning containers using foliage alone, but flowers add a certain energy. Purple Pixie® Loropetalum is particularly elegant when paired with white blooms or soft purples and pinks. For a serene composition, pair Purple Pixie® with Endurascape™ ‘White Blush’ Verbena. To give the planting a little more height turn to the more upright blooms of Queen Mum™ Agapanthus or ‘White’ Drakensberg Daisy™ Hardy Garden Gerbera. The large, course-textured blooms provide contrast and create a bolder look to the planting. For an even livelier mix, try yellow or magenta flowers.
4. Cold-Weather Friends
With evergreen foliage, Purple Pixie® continues to shine all winter long. Provide color contrast to liven up winter containers by pairing Purple Pixie® with ‘Cracked Ice’ Heucherella and Beyond Blue™ Festuca. Texture is another great way to create winter interest. Hellebores and ‘Soft Caress’ Mahonia provide textural contrast as well as winter blooms. For a simple, but elegant pairing, plant Purple Pixie® with Mountain Snow™ Pieris.
5. Getting Grounded
Containers are not the only place where Purple Pixie® can show off. Few plants are as spectacular cascading over stone or brick walls. The purple foliage is most dramatic against natural stone as well as gray and earth-toned bricks. Look for small openings along the edge of the wall where you can tuck plants. The tumbling foliage will soften hard lines of the wall. Purple Pixie® also looks graceful spilling down a slope or terrace. The flowing foliage bridges one level to the next, creating a dynamic planting.
