When it comes to beautiful blooms, no other season has us seeing stars quite like spring. From the exploding star-like blooms of agapanthus to deep blue veronicas that are as rich in hue as the night sky, spring blooms have inspired our latest easy-to-make DIY, a cut flower arrangement that’s out of this world.
Choose Your Vessel
For a dreamy otherworldly aesthetic, it’s important to pick the right vessel. The metal moon vase in these photos sent us out of orbit with its celestial shape, but hobnail glass or hammered metal are also perfect picks for achieving this look. For another option, select a trendy disco ball vase to reflect light as your cut blooms dazzle.
Snip One of These Garden Stars
As unique as the stars in the sky, there’s nothing quite as special as home-grown elements in an arrangement. Cut flowers and foliage taken straight from the landscape weave in colors, shapes, and varieties you can’t find at the store, imbue a sense of the passing seasons, and add originality to floral gifts and centerpieces.
For this arrangement, Ever White™ Agapanthus is the focal point, its starlike spikes of gleaming white blooms telling the celestial story through shape and form. A fabulous repeat blooming variety that produces cut flower-worthy blooms in abundance, this tough and drought-tolerant pick delights garden-goers and pollinators alike.
The cascading white bell-like blooms of Mountain Snow™ Pieris spill from the vessel like a radiant meteor shower. One of the earliest blooming shrubs in the landscape, this evergreen beauty offers glossy green foliage year–round and fabulous ivory blooms at the beginning of spring.
Finally, the sky’s the limit with Dark Blue Moody Blues™ Veronica, which adds height, curiosity, and playfulness to this arrangement. Its bright flower spikes bloom in abundance from spring through the fall, with a compact form that’s perfect for garden beds and containers alike.
Assemble Your Celestial Arrangement
Now for the fun part: cutting from the garden! Choose stems that are healthy and vibrant, taking care to trim them at an angle. If you’re cutting multiple blooms, cutting fully open flowers as well as buds creates visual interest. Source other flowers and foliage from the rest of the landscape as well as the grocery store to have a variety of options to choose from: here, we’ve added grocery store roses, mums, wax flowers, and eucalyptus, as well as pretty foliage snipped from Juliet® Cleyera.
Now, it’s time to assemble. Start by arranging the larger blooms, such as the agapanthus, roses and mums, as the focal points of your arrangement. Next, add in the delicate wax flower and eucalyptus to provide texture and fill out the bouquet. Then, carefully incorporate the pieris and veronica as “spiller” and “thriller” elements, interspersing them throughout the arrangement to create a sense of movement.
Once your arrangement is assembled, take a moment to step back and admire your handiwork. Adjust any stems or blooms as needed to achieve the desired shape and balance. Finally, ensure the arrangement has adequate water and cut flower food to maximize its longevity.
With a blend of cut blooms and celestial shapes, you can create a stunning bouquet that captures the magic of the cosmos. So head out into the backyard, gather your garden gems, and let your creativity soar as you craft your very own celestial bouquet.
