How to Create Spooky Container Gardens

These container gardens work well on either side of your food table or drink table.

Once the party is over place them by your front door or back door for a festive look!

How to create spooky Southern Living Plant Collection container gardens:

Materials:

  • (2) 21-inch container gardens
  • Soil
  • Bark
  • 2 bushels of dried curly willow
  • 4 Purple Pixie® Loropetalum
  • 4 medium Cinderella pumpkins
  • 6 gourds
  • Accent material: magnolia leaves

Preparation:

  1. Make sure your container has a hole in the bottom of it so the water can drain once you start watering.
  2. Fill the bottom of your container with the pots from the plants that you are going to use. Simply turn them over and place them in the bottom of the pot.
  3. Fill half of the container with bark.
*Tip:  Add the empty pots and bark to cut down on the amount of soil needed.
  4. In the remaining space, pour in the soil until approximately 1 inch below the rim of the container.
Ask your local garden center which container, bark and soil they recommend for you to build your container garden.
  5. Plant 2 Purple Pixie® Loropetalum side-by-side near the front of your container.
  6. Insert one bushel of dried curly willow
  7. Place 2 Cinderella pumpkins and three gourds on top of the Purple Pixie® Loropetalum near the front of the container
  8. Stick magnolia leaves in between the plant material, pumpkins and gourds
